How does a coworking space work?

Imagine if each one of these rectangles was a different member of a coworking space. You can see from the picture that they are all different and their characteristics are unique.

You can say the same about coworking members in real life. Let's do a compare and contrast.

In a traditional office, you purchase or lease one unit and you can come and go and use this unit whenever you want. You can decorate it how you want, you can choose the internet service, and what supplies you use to clean it. Ultimately, all of the decisions and management of the unit are up to you.

In a coworking space, the coworking space purchases or leases one unit from a landlord or seller. The coworking space then licenses the use of the space out to members. A member only pays for a membership fee which is all inclusive of the time and space the member uses. In contrast to the above example, the coworking space manages, decorates, furnishes, chooses the internet service, the cleaning supplies that clean it, make sure that the space is used well and coordinates who uses the space when while also providing other benefits, like free coffee, learning opportunities, networking, etc. The member just shows up and works and doesn't have to worry about any of these things.

So, why would someone want to choose to cowork? Many members choose to cowork because it simply makes their lives easier, it allows them to be around other people, it is a great way to lessen the loneliness one might feel when working remotely for a long time, and it offers referral opportunities. Coworking provides the biggest perk of community and the sense of belonging.
